Against AEK Athens

Another major rival of Olympiacos is AEK Athens, due to their proximity and strong on-pitch rivalry. The rivalry between Olympiacos and PAOK, although PAOK was rarely a primary contestant of Olympiacos, is long-standing, dating back to the 1960s, when Olympiacos negotiated to acquire the player-symbol of PAOK, Giorgos Koudas.

PAOK established a long tradition of winning at the period 1966-1991 with 20 home wins in 23 games. Also relies on the rivalry between Athens and Thessaloniki, the country's two major cities. Another rival of Olympiacos used to be Ethnikos Piraeus, the second-most successful club of Piraeus, but the rivalry languished because Ethnikos Piraeus no longer plays in the top tier of Greek football.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos

Kyriakos Papadopoulos was signed from Svoronos Katerinis and was promoted from the Olympiacos U18 team in July 2007. He has so far featured in several Olympiacos pre-season friendlies, three league games and three Greek cup games.

In the summer of 2007, Papadopoulos was invited on trial to train with the Espanyol youth team during the pre-season, with a view to giving the player a role in the team. However, Papadopoulos performed well enough for the club's management staff to fast-track him and promote him to the first team, and offered him a contract immediately.

However, Olympiakos scouts were also aware of the prodigy's talents, and especially the former Manager of Olympiacos Mr. George Louvaris was quick to secure a deal with Papadopoulos' father Nikos Papadopoulos, thus bringing him to Piraeus.

The 2007/2008 season has been very promising for Papadopoulos. He made his competitive debut for Olympiacos in the Greek Superleague as a substitute during a 3-1 win over Atromitos on December 2, 2007, thus becoming the youngest player to ever play in the Greek league. He also made the substitutes bench in the Champions League against Real Madrid and Lazio, and has featured in several Greek Cup games. If Papadopoulos featured in any Champions League games, he would have smashed the record for the youngest player to ever compete in the competition by nearly two years.

In September 2008 Kyriakos signed a new contract with Olympiakos, which included a £4.6 million release clause, over three years. On 2 November 2008 Kyriakos made his first league appearance of the 2008/2009 season for Olympiakos at home to Ergotelis in a 2-0 home win.

Karaiskakis Stadium

The Karaiskakis Stadium had fallen in disrepair and its use was passed to Olympiacos in April 2003; the club took the responsibility to build a new football-only ground in its place, to be used for the football tournament of the 2004 Olympics.

In return, Olympiacos got exclusive use of the stadium until 2052, covering all maintenance costs and also paying 15% of revenue to the State. The old stadium was demolished in the spring of 2003 and the whole project was constructed in the record period of 14 months. It was completed in June 30, 2004 at a total cost of €60 million., the Karaiskakis Stadium is one of the most modern football grounds in Europe, also hosting the museum of Olympiacos and several facilities around.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos

He was called for duty for the U-19 Greece team to participate in the Elite round of the 2007 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship. He participated in all three group games against Moldova, Netherlands and Russia, helping Greece finish top and qualify for the finals.

Papadopoulos featured at the heart of the Greek defence in the finals tournament and was partners with team-mate Konstantinos Lambropoulos. He was instrumental in keeping a clean sheet against the Czech Republic, as well as good performances against England and Italy. His performances attracted attention from scouts of teams such Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC.

The teams were impressed with the defender's maturity in a competition in which he was the youngest player by 13 months. Despite being the youngest player in the tournament, he was also one of the 10 most talented players in Europe as considered by UEFA in their UEFA U19 Team of the Tournament.

Otto Rehhagel is also said to have been impressed with the youngster's performances, and has met with EPO officials to talk about moving Kyriakos to the senior team. He has yet to be invited to a senior team match.

European performance

Olympiacos has a long presence in UEFA competitions, debuting on September 13, 1959, against Milan for the 1959–60 European Cup, being the first Greek team in European competition. However, they were to play against Beşiktaş for the preliminary round of the 1958–59 European Cup, but withdrew. Olympiacos was also the first Greek team to advance to the next round of any European competition, eliminating Zagłębie Sosnowiec for the 1963–64 European Cup Winners' Cup. Their best European results were reaching the quarter-finals of the 1998–99 UEFA Champions League, where they were eliminated by Juventus, and the quarter-finals of the 1992–93 European Cup Winners' Cup, before losing to Atlético Madrid.

At the European level, Olympiacos have a strong record in home games. This has been proved by some long-standing unbeaten sequences, especially in the UEFA Champions League, where Manchester United was the first team to beat Olympiacos at home, in the latter's fifth consecutive participation in the tournament with its new format. In addition, Olympiacos gained impressive wins at home, like the stunning 6–2 victory over the then Champions League runners-up Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League, and three consecutive large wins in the 2008–09 UEFA Cup, 5–0 against Nordsjælland, 5–1 against Benfica and 4–0 against Hertha Berlin. Olympiacos will celebrate their 200th European game on February 23, 2010 against FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the final 16 of the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League .
